NEW ENERDAY Natural Gas Fuel Cell

Record-breaking low degradation after 25,000 hours of operation

30.04.2025

Today, a NEW ENERDAY fuel cell power generator based on Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology, has reached a runtime of 25,100 operational hours with an average of 8,330 hours per year. The device from serial manufacturing is owned and operated by a gas utility in Northern Germany and fueled with natural gas.

Installed in 2022, the fuel cell shows a very low power loss respectively degradation of less than 6 % over operation time only, corresponding with <0.2 % per 1,000 hours, as the scientific community calculates.

Matthias Boltze, founder and CEO of NEW ENERDAY says: “This result makes our team proud. Such low power degradation in a commercial fuel cell generator is record-breaking. So far, lower values have only been achieved for SOFCs at laboratory benches on special test stacks, but not on complete power systems.”

“This result underlines the suitability of NEW ENERDAY’s SOFC technology for professional applications – e.g. telecom, oil & gas, security, meteorology – where properties like

  • robustness and durability,
  • fuel efficiency and low emissions,
  • freedom from maintenance for up to 2 years and
  • commonly available fuel

play a significant role in minimizing the total cost of ownership.” says Markus Münch, Senior Product Manager with New Enerday.

In addition to the natural gas / CNG and Propane fuel converting generators which have been available since 2014, future multi-fuel appliances will also be able to convert Hydrogen, Ammonia and Methanol.
